The goal is to pressure Democrats into accepting Republican demands by withholding critical aid like SNAP benefits.
Here’s what’s happening in the real world, rather than in Trump's Fantasyland:
• The Trump administration has warned that nearly 42 million citizens could lose access to food stamps (SNAP) starting November 1 due to the ongoing government shutdown.
• The shutdown stems from a standoff over funding for the Affordable Care Act (aka "Obamacare"). Democrats want to extend healthcare subsidies, while Republicans are demanding a “clean” funding bill without those provisions. Under Trumpcare, more than 4 millions U.S. citizens stand to lose their health benefits.
• The USDA says it won’t use emergency contingency funds to cover SNAP benefits, claiming those funds are legally reserved for disaster relief and not regular monthly aid. Yet, and at the same time, Trump is also systematically phasing out disaster relief as well.
• Critics argue this decision is a form of political coercion—using hunger as a bargaining chip to force Democrats to back down on healthcare protections.
• The administration has also refused to reallocate funds from other nutrition programs, stating it would harm school meals and infant formula access. Yet, Trump's Republican One Big Beautiful Bill Act also harms school meals regardless of the reallocations. Trump also fired the scientists who were tasked with making sure infant formula is safe for babies to drink.
Notably, deaths associated with baby formula have been linked to bacterial contamination in manufacturing plants, insufficient nutritional content, and unsafe preparation practices, resulting in product recalls and lawsuits. In 2022, Abbott Nutrition recalled several brands of powdered infant formula, including Similac, Alimentum, and EleCare, produced at its facility in Sturgis, Michigan. The recall followed reports of infants being hospitalized with infections from the bacteria Cronobacter sakazakii and Salmonella. Tragically, two infants died as a result.
The gist of the matter is that they are giving Democrats two choices: Let your constituency starve or let them have Medical care. They cannot have both, and even after you chose, they're going to lose the other one regardless.
