Schwob School of Music at Columbus State University
Our first Music Under the Dome concert of the 2021-22 season, The Solo Vision, features both amazing visual designs and incredible performers who will present a series of beautiful solo works for marimba, guitar, piano, French horn, and viola.
Our first two works by Eric Sammut, Spirals 1&2, feature athletic virtuosity on the marimba as played by Dominican percussionist, Angel Valenzuela. Angel’s marimba colleague, Costa Rican Juan Retana, will next perform Prokofiev’s colorful Dance of the Knights.
After this, prize-winning guitarist and conductor Ying Xu will perform Tarrega’s hauntingly beautiful Recuerdos de la Alhambra, followed by Schwob pianist Walter Cornwell performing Poulenc’s playful Trois Pieces.
The next two works feature Schwob faculty members, starting with Dr. Anne-Marie Cherry, who will present Visions for Horn and Mixed Media, a wildly inventive piece by James Naigus.
Her wonderful viola colleague, Dr. Katrin Meidell will finish this first concert with a fiendishly challenging piece by Shawn Renzoh Head entitled Burning Roots No. 2.
The visual designs will be produced by artist and Omnisphere Theater director Lance Tankersley, who will create imaginative full-dome effects to accompany these fantastic solo works!
Reception at 5pm with wine and cheese, and 45-minute concert at 5:37pm.
