The Columbus Jaycees held a Leadership Summit this Saturday morning at the Macon Road branch of the Columbus Public Library.

The Summit was opened by Brittany Brown (Ward) and guest Speakers on the dais included local entrepreneurs Sherricka Day of The Photo Shop and Maria Hayes of Hype House - Happy Heart Mirror. Ms Day, a local supporter of the arts and entertainment communities, works for AFLAC and Ms Hayes is a former educator.

Also in attendance was "Moments to Memories" of Phenix City, AL.

Highlights from the speakers encouraged young entrepreneurs to always evolve in order to keep growing, and to stay in touch with your community and network in order to build your business. "Sometimes," said Ms Day "you may have to step back in order to step up."

Ms Hayes encouraged the audience to let go of fears ("don't freak out"), including fear of your direct competition. She emphasized the need to stay motivated and "get your hustle game on," which will likely include being where you need to be when you need to be there in order to build your business and give it staying power.

History of the Jaycees

In 1915, Henry Giessenbier Jr. founded the first Junior Chamber movement in the St. Louis, MO area. The JCI website writes that Giessenbier Jr. envisioned the positive change that youth could make if they had the right resources and what began as a local movement quickly spread around the nation and the world.

At its peak, the JCI had more than 9,000 members nationwide, with young people joining together across the United States and then across the globe to create positive forces in their communities on a local, national and international scale.

According to their website, "JCI members would have the opportunity to develop as individuals, contribute to the prosperity of economic infrastructure through entrepreneurship, understand and appreciate the social dynamics that enable community problem-solving and promote goodwill, cooperation and understanding amongst all people. That enduring vision lives on through the organization today."
