CCSC Needs New Flags for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Park on Buena Vista Road
Background
Mr. Lonnie Jackson was easily recognized as a man committed to his country, his city, and his community service, and Columbus never forgot all of the things he did to better the lives of the children he served.
For more than 20 years, the retired Army Sergeant was said to have had a passion for kids, and at the time of his passing in 2006, the Ledger-Enquirer quoted his wife, Bettye, as saying "... He had a [tutorial] program that went a whole week long during the summer at Eastway..." The year following his demise, Eastway Elementary was renamed The Lonnie Jackson Academy.
It was said that he influenced more than 24,000 area students through the tutorial program, which was known as "The Combined Communities of South Columbus," now known as C.C.S.C., Inc. The program has carried on since his passing under the direction of one of its longest enduring senior volunteers and tutorial program principal, retired educator Tresa Hart-Williams and his daughter, Lonya Jackson-Sarden.
Mr. Jackson also helped to establish the Vietnam Memorial Wall at Buena Vista Road and Lawyers Lane and worked on numerous clean-up projects in the streets, encouraging everyone around him to get involved in helping to keep Columbus clean, and teaching the kids to take responsibility for their education and their own futures.
The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Park is now in need of your help.
C.C.S.C., Inc. needs donations of 3x5-FOOT nylon American flags, as well as P.O.W. flags of the same size to replace the worn ones at the Memorial site.
Please contact Ms. Hart-Williams at 706-315-8847 as soon as possible in order to get directions on where to drop off your flag donations.
Your help is greatly appreciated.
