COVID - 19 has also claimed the lives of Muscogee County Sheriff's Deputy Bobby Williams on September 13 (Colonial Funeral Home) and Columbus Police Officer Randy Kiel on September 15 (McMullen Funeral Home).
Memorial services for both officers have already taken place.
Peebles passed away on Tuesday, September 21. It was our understanding that he became ill this past August 2021 and had been hospitalized at Piedmont for a few weeks before his death.
The candlelight vigil will take place at 7 PM this evening (Sept. 25th) at Overflo Salon & Barber Shop, 1816 Midtown Drive, Columbus, where the man known by many as "Uncle Sherman" also worked as a barber. Masks are mandatory for this service.
Judge Ben Land Statement
All losses hurt, but this one really stings.
Sherman Peebles was more than a law enforcement officer. He was a loving husband, a devoted family member, a neighborhood barber, an entrepreneur, and above all a true friend. He had my back, literally and figuratively, for the last 3 1/2 years, as well as the backs of all who worked in our local courts. He worked in a stressful environment, but his mere presence, his calming smile, his sense of control, and his humility and professionalism never failed to make things better and raise the bar for others. To say he will be missed does not do justice to the life he led or the wonderful example he set for all who crossed paths with him. RIP, Sherman. You were a very good man who led an exemplary life. We should all strive to follow your lead.
