International Paper -Headquartered in Memphis TN- Shuts Down Georgia Operations
International Paper, founded in 1898, was the formation of a merger of 17 mills in the northeastern USA, initially dominating newsprint production.
It expanded into the American South and Canada in the 1920s, acquiring more companies and diversifying into packaging and other paper products over the 20th century, then it expanded globally in the 1980s.
The company underwent several restructurings, including a divestment of power interests in 1935, and eventually shifted its focus to a more diverse range of forest products. It is currently headquartered in Memphis, TN.
As of August/September, 2025, International Paper will close down its Savannah and Riceboro facilities, following up closures in Campti, Louisiana; Phoenix, Arizona; Hazleton, Pennsylvania; and St. Louis, Missouri, and a container facility in Buena Park, California, by July 2025, affecting thousands of employees.
